Following the Business Architecture Framework (though more often standing alone); an operating model is a working representation of how the magic is structured in a business. This encompasses digital, manufacturing, services, people, commercial, sales channels and everything that delivers functionally. In media terms they are usually textual and passive with a few supporting images. Increasingly, they are visualised as infographics/dashboards to represent what is going on day-to-day. Occasionally, they are simulated with real data showing real-time how business variables are impacting production , sales and so on. Often there is a single operating model, larger businesses can have multiple operating models for different divisions/products or locations/facilities. A Target Operating Model is simply a desired future state for a current operating models based on anticipated changes to the business or marketplace.
